How to Use Essential Oils for Labor Pain

There is nothing like the experience, the intensity, or the transformation of going through active labor. I recall from my own first childbirth that early labor was a state of full awareness bound up with excitement, exhilaration, and anxiousness; you are living right on the edge of the spectacular, while dreading the impending muck of the pain and terror of the unknown.
From this mixture of adrenaline and fatigue, just when I was forgetting what I was doing and why I was doing it (baby, what?!), full-on active labor kicked in. From then on out, I could do nothing more than breath from one moment to the next. But throughout this ritual of transformation there were calming voices, healing hands, and hot water compresses. I felt safer in the knowledge that my ‘team’ was there, those ever-present sages of wisdom (who used to just be women but were elevated in my mind to Goddess level) and their bag of tools to support them as they coped with my anxiousness and I’ll just say it, PAIN!! of unmedicated childbearing.
Years later I feel a bit like Rodney Dangerfield going “Back to School''. If only I could go back all-knowing and with all of the research and technology we have now and hand out bottles of essential oil to my support team and all of the caretakers of women in the generations before me who gave birth without essential oils. I’d whisper in their ears, don't forget the essential oils, Goddesses of Birth!! Why did we set aside this beautiful, ancient, traditional practice of oiling our moms during labor? However, at the crux of it is that we are in a period of “re-oiling now”, with higher-quality essential oils and evermore positive testimonials and evidence-based research. Those in the know get that essential oils belong with birthing. Why? In a nutshell, essential oils are unique from both the natural and allopathic models of support during labor in four main ways:
1. Pure essential oils are truly holistic, offering healing on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels all at once.
2. Their incredibly minute molecular weight and lipid make-up enable them to easily and deeply penetrate tissues, muscles and nerves so that they can soothe, heal, numb, and relax where they are needed most.

In the tiniest glass jar that you can find (check for 5/8 dram glass bottles at Fettle Botanical or online) blend one of the formulas below using only therapeutic- quality essential oils (contact me for a free consult if you need help) and keep closed with a tight-fitting lid stored in a dark place.
Blend 1: 10 drops of Clary Cage**, 8 drops of Lavender, 6 drops of Rose
Blend 2: 10 drops of Clary Sage**, 8 drops of Roman Chamomile, 6 drops of Cedarwood
Blend 3: 10 drops of White Fir, 8 drops of Lavender, 6 drops of either Jasmine or Frankincense
** Discontinue the use of Clary Sage once contractions are regular and effective.
During active labor or when you next have a normal bodily ache or pain of your own, pull out your choice blend and experiment with using the oils in one or more of the following ways:
Inhalation- Apply a few drops of your blend to a cloth and inhale deeply between contractions (or if you are supporting a mom-to-be, you may prepare a blend on cloth for her to inhale, always asking her permission first of course!).
Labor bath- Add 4-8 drops to one tablespoon of full fat milk, glycerine, or bath salt and stir into a hot bath after it has filled. *Do not use essential oils in a birthing tub.
Foot bath- Add 3-4 drops of your blend to 1 tsp. of glycerine, bath salt, milk or cream and stir into a hot foot bath. *A foot bath is a good alternative to a labor bath if a bathtub is not available or if a water birth is planned and there is only one tub.
Hot compress- Add 2-4 drops of your essential oil blend to 1 tsp. of glycerine or another emulsifier and stir into a bowl of water. Soak a rag in the hot water blend before applying as a compress. For back labor pain, try adding a few drops of black pepper essential oil to your blend.
Massage- Add 2-3 drops of your labor blend per teaspoon of massage oil used. Apply via massage.

In 2011 our family went through the biggest trial we had ever faced, but it paved the way for what became Your Oil Tools.
It was a typical February day. I was working, as usual, plowing snow! I owned a landscaping company and this winter was harder on the equipment than years past, so I had the joy of replacing the transmission on my truck.
Not thinking anything of it, I picked up my truck that morning and drove it straight to the property where I was going to get my trailer and equipment. As I was hooking up the trailer, the truck burst into flames. I was shocked and didn’t know what to do.
I immediately grabbed my cell phone and called 911. The fire was spreading so fast, there were streams of fire where the gas was leaking onto the ground and coming into the cab of the truck. I reached into the truck and attempted to turn it off but nothing happened. The truck continued to run even while I held the keys in my hand. My brain went to the worst-case scenario!
From working on the property, I knew there was a fire extinguisher on the other side of the building, so I ran as fast as I could to grab it. I discharged the first extinguisher and then ran to get another. By the time I emptied the third fire extinguisher the first responders started arriving.
At the time I couldn’t think of anything, all I was trying to do was save my equipment in the building that I was parked next to. Less than 30 minutes later I blacked out and was in an ambulance on my way to the hospital. I was greeted at the trauma center by numerous doctors and nurses ready to help me.
Unfortunately, in the process of trying to turn off the truck and put out the fire, I was exposed to toxic fumes that left me with chemical burns to my lungs and smoke inhalation.
We spent almost 2 years trying different treatments with doctors and specialists but nothing seemed to be working. The medication was causing more damage than good. I tore my Achilles’ tendon from being on steroids too long. I spent several months on the couch because I couldn’t breathe with my oxygen saturation at 60%. It was the absolute worst experience of my life. I was completely at my wit’s end and truly desired to return to normal life and was willing to try almost anything.
One day my wife brought home some essential oils she had been given from a friend. My first reaction was to tell her she was crazy and her friend was also. I was hesitant to try them to say the least. Almost every day on my medication, I got a headache that just wouldn’t quit. With just a few drops of essential oils on the back of my neck and my temples, my headache started to dissipate and within 20 minutes I felt better.
I couldn’t believe it was working so I decided to keep using them. Within a few days of using essential oils, I noticed such a big difference. I was starting to feel better, had more energy overall, and my lungs were starting to open up a bit more.
I started using natural health solutions, changing my diet, and using essential oils regularly. Over the last 10 years, I have learned how to manage my health issues naturally. It would be gimmicky of me to say it changed my life but it did! That's why I’m so passionate about what I do.

Cooking with Essential Oils
Along with using essential oils to make your kitchen look and smell completely clean, you can also cook with essential oils. These oils can add a lot of different flavors to your favorite food and drinks.
A big reason essential oils are popular in cooking is that you can use these oils instead of certain ingredients that are hard to find. Lavender is an example of this. Finding a lavender flower can be difficult and might take some time, but having some lavender essential oil on-hand will solve that problem for you.
Don't Overdo It
Essential oils have intense flavor properties, and you will realize this when you start experimenting with them in your cooking, so don't overdo it. One or two drops will go a long way. If you're new to adding essential oils to your food, then it is recommended to add them slowly into your recipe. Adding too much oil can quickly ruin a dish.
Remember that some essential oils are stronger than others. Cumin, oregano, cinnamon,
and thyme are all naturally very strong, so be a little extra careful with these. Even
experienced cooks that use essential oils will tell you to add these oils very carefully,

My Daily Routine. Healing from serious personal trauma can be a lifelong journey. Physical recovery is often outlasted by a mental struggle and can result in a series of long-lasting symptoms. Each day may be plagued with a sense that you’re no longer who you used to be, a truly terrifying state of being. Each traumatic experience is utterly personal and no two battles to recover are ever the same. But, as someone personally familiar with the disorder, I can assure you of two absolute truths: (1) you are NOT alone, and (2) you are worth it!
Millions of Americans struggle with PTSD each year. A staggering 8% of the population is expected to deal with the mental disorder at some point in their lives. As a member of that afflicted population, I want to share with you my daily routine. I’ve include both personal and essential oil habits I use to arm my body and mind with tools that help stymie the worst of my symptoms. In sharing, I hope to offer some help with the struggle against PTSD.
My morning. I wake up early, not because of the PTSD, but by choice. Getting up early provides me with the opportunity to reflect on the previous day and prepare for the one at hand. I also treasure an early morning’s quiet lack of distraction! Before beginning with my supplements I take time to read and to pray.
Essential oils and dietary supplements are important parts of my day. They help support my body and thus, my mind and spirit. As far as oils go, I frequently use Copaiba, Frankincense and Pink Pepper: each great for boosting mental awareness and promoting cellular health. Also, I’ve developed my own roller bottle recipe. In it, I add the Restful Blend, Grounding Blend, Vetiver and Roman Chamomile. I have affectionately named this concoction the Warrior Blend. I will roll out the blend onto the back of my neck, across my wrists and over my heart. I keep this blend on me at all times, only ever removing it from my pocket to re-apply!
The supplements I take are to boost metabolism and help my body run smoothly. I developed my own personal supplemental schedule with the help of my healthcare provider. If you’re interested to learn what supplements may enhance your own health, I’d recommend speaking with your doctor. Basic blood labs can often point you in the right direction to get started!
My afternoon. After lunch, I like to re-apply my Warrior Blend. I also like diffusing a mint and citrus oil, paring two oils that ALWAYS go fabulously with one another. Consider using Peppermint with Wild Orange or, my personal fav, Spearmint with Lime. The mixture of oils help stimulate the body’s natural ability to promote homeostasis, a ‘steady state’. Finding ‘balance’ for your body and mind in the midst of our hectic lives is no simple task, but can be immensely beneficial for your long-term mental and physical health!
My evening. My evenings are reserved for family and friends – the most effective medicine I have! I’ve made every effort to cultivate a tradition of sit-down family meals wherein we discuss one another’s days. We like sharing our “highs and lows.” Everyone around the table discusses the awesome and not-so-awesome aspects of their day. If the not-so-awesome parts of anyone’s day can be avoided or alleviated with help from another, we’ll address it and offer solutions. This practice has helped create a great social network within my family.
Establishing your room as your own personal oasis helps ensure restful nights. A regular sleep schedule is paramount to my mental and physical well-being. When I set my bedtime at 10pm, for instance, it’s important to me to be ASLEEP by 10, not just in bed. 30 minute prior to falling asleep, I’ll diffuse the Restful Blend, which helps. But, maintaining a healthy sleep schedule requires considerable personal discipline. QUICK TIP: If you have a TV in your room, remove it! While you’re at it, remove all computers, tablets or smartphones from arm’s reach. The blue light emitted from many of our cherished electronics can stimulate wakefulness within the mind, making it difficult to fall asleep.
As I fall asleep, I say my devotionals, giving thanks for the day and looking forward to the next. If there’s something in particular that’s bothering you, I’ve found it helpful to write it down. My belief: once it’s on that paper, it’s not allowed in your head while you sleep.

Throat Spray is a beautiful spray blend which you can use easily throughout the day as needed. Using a 1oz spray bottle, add 8 drops of Protective Blend, 2 drops Frankincense & 1 drop Melissa. Fill to the top with water. Shake the bottle and spray directly into the mouth as needed.
Diffuser Blend for Cold & Cough - An essential oil diffuser is a powerful aromatherapy tool, enabling you to easily and effectively turn any enclosed area into a naturally cleansed space. For cold and cough, add 1 drop Oregano, 3 drops Lemon, 2 drops Protective Blend, 1 drop Cinnamon (optional) and combine in the diffuser with water. Double the recipe as necessary.
Instead of artificial cough syrup you can try an all natural, essential oil based recipe to help sooth your throat. Take ½ cup of honey and add 8 drops each Lemon, Frankincense, Clove, Peppermint and Orange. Take 1 tsp every 2-3 hours as needed.
CAUTIONS
A recent post on Facebook went viral when a woman purchasing essential oils reported her cat experienced adverse affects. Here's a brief synopsis of essential oil safety for cats taken from two resources Janet Roark - Essential Oil Vet and the Dog Oiler .
For Cats:
This is VERY important for dogs and small animals!!!
For cats, the preferred method for Essential Oil application is diffusion, using just a couple drops of oil in a diffuser with 100-200 drops of water. This helps keep cats from being overexposed to the very potent oils and their powerful effects.
Start out with your oils MORE diluted when introducing Essential Oils topically to your pet. Often times the dilution ratios need to be as much as 1 drop of Essential Oil to 100 drops of carrier oil. The safety of your pet is paramount.
You can use carrier oils such as Fractionated Coconut Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Almond Oil, etc. to dilute your essential oil.
You can always increase the concentration if the desired effect is not reached, but it is difficult to remove an Essential Oil once it has already been absorbed.
Remember, each animal is an individual and your pet may be more or less sensitive than others. Observe their behavior – they will tell you!
Cats metabolize and excrete things very differently than the rest of the animal family. Cat livers do not not have the enzymes to break down certain chemicals. And when the liver (and the body) does not recognize a substance, it immediately stores it somewhere until it can figure out what to do with it! This leads to toxicity, tumors, disease and extreme imbalances of the body. By the way, this is the case for humans and animals alike, but cats are much more sensitive.
Cats are particularly sensitive to a group of oxygenated compounds called ketones, phenols, alpha pinene, some monoterpenes, and carvacrol (a byproduct of d-limonene which is found in all citrus fruits and in many tree oils) which their livers can not break down.
Cats lack a liver enzyme (glucuronyl transferase) that humans and dogs have. This enzyme is necessary to metabolize and eliminate some essential oil constituents. Therefore, Melaleuca (Tea Tree) and all Citrus oils are toxic to cats.
Cats are also sensitive to high levels of phenols (which are found in Clove Bud, Oregano Peppermint and Thyme) and ketones (found in White Fir, Wintergreen, Rosemary, and Vetiver). Oils with high levels of these constituents may overwhelm the ability of the cat’s liver to properly metabolize and effectively eliminate them, which can result in toxic overload.
Cypress and Roman Chamomile also can be problematic for cats.
Do not use Blends with these oils (except in the few instances recommended in the next section).
If you decide to use any of the above-mentioned oils, dilute heavily. I recommend only using these oils for short periods of time when other oils are not giving needed support.

The experts agree to avoid the following oils and blends containing these oils:
Melaleuca (Tea Tree), Eucalyptus, Lemon, Grapefruit, Lime, Bergamot, Orange, Tangerine, Clove, Oregano, Cinnamon, Thyme, Rosemary, Wintergreen, and Birch.
These oils should be used with caution and at least avoided for topical and internal use:
Dill, Fennel, Basil, Roman Chamomile, Vetiver, Petitgrain, and Cypress.
Every animal is different and some may be more sensitive to certain oils than others.
In all cases to avoid toxic reactions with your cats, do the following:

]]>I was treating myself to a facial (yes folks, guys can get facials) and the spa was diffusing essential oils at the front desk. They had an awesome blend going and I thought just how good it smelled. Written next to the diffuser were the oils in the diffuser.
I realized I had been underutilizing the essential oils at my disposal so I started blending different aromas together based on research I had done on emotions, for ailments, and just for kicks and giggles.

It's been very heart warming to see the enthusiasm of our customers in sharing these diffuser recipes. Here's our most popular so far (determined by number of shares):
How did I come up with these? Most of the time I started with a theme, then consulted which oil goes with the theme, and created a blend of two or three more that go well with it. Most of the time I blend them in my hand then I waft them at my kids or my wife and ask them what they think. If they shake their heads then I know to start over. If they like the smell, then I know I've got a winner!
Thanks for being part of our diffusing journey. We hope you like these recipes but most importantly, that you are getting the most therapeutic benefit from the essential oils that you are so passionate about.
